Waters Corporation (NYSE: WAT) opened Pittcon 2015 by showcasing its new capabilities and innovations that are driving analytical science in exciting and novel directions.
“At Pittcon this year, we are showing customers how Waters’ innovations are opening doors to breakthrough solutions in Health Science, breaking down barriers in biopharmaceutical manufacturing processes, and reimagining laboratory data management,” said Dr. Rohit Khanna, Vice President of Worldwide Marketing for the Waters Division. “These new capabilities and innovations are the result of Waters’ scientific focus, customer collaborations, and holistic view to optimize every component of a solution: from hardware, to software, to consumables, to service. That’s what it takes to keep delivering ‘The Science of What’s Possible.'”
Full Spectrum Molecular Imaging System
Leading Waters’® roster of new technologies is a new full spectrum molecular imaging system, the first system ever to allow scientists to access enhanced matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization (MALDI) and desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) with ion mobility separation (IMS) in a single mass spectrometry platform.
Based on the Waters SYNAPT® G2-Si mass spectrometer, the imaging capabilities of the new full spectrum molecular imaging system enable research laboratories to pinpoint with greater specificity the distribution of large and small molecules within tissue samples. Information derived from imaging experiments can greatly benefit cancer, cardiovascular and neuro-degenerative research by measuring the distribution of molecules in cells and tissues. MS imaging also allows researchers to identify different tissue types based on their molecular composition.
“By combining MALDI with DESI and ion mobility on the same instrument, Waters brings molecular imaging into a new realm,” said Dr. Jeff Mazzeo, Sr. Director, Health Sciences, Waters Division. “We are committed to giving cell biologists, biochemists, clinical researchers and analytical scientists the tools they need to obtain a maximum amount of information to advance their research into human health. The new full spectrum molecular imaging system combines and optimizes Waters’ mass spectrometry technologies to deliver a level of detail and molecular information beyond that of any individual imaging technique.” Waters plans to begin shipments of its full spectrum molecular imaging system in the third quarter of 2015.
NuGenesis Lab Management System
Now available, The NuGenesis® Lab Management System is a unique and powerful alternative to a traditional Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) with advances that enable deeper insight into scientific challenges, accelerated decision-making, better business results and compliance with government regulations.
The NuGenesis Lab Management System offers high impact functionality. New advances include NuGenesis SampleShare, an optional, secure web-client for sample submissions and results management; NuGenesis Stability, a complete stability protocol management and testing solution to facilitate a consistent regimented workflow across lab operations; NuGenesis Connectors, a bi-directional link between lab systems and business applications, and Paradigm™ Scientific Search, a fully integrated scientific search solution for text, documents and science objects.
Uniquely combining data, workflow and sample management capabilities to support the entire product lifecycle from discovery through manufacturing, the NuGenesis Lab Management System is a user-centric platform that encompasses a Scientific
Data Management System (SDMS), Electronic Laboratory Notebook (ELN) and Laboratory Execution System (LES).
“The NuGenesis Lab Management System is more comprehensive than anything in its class, combining new improvements with key existing capabilities, minus the complex, costly and time-consuming limitations associated with traditional LIMS,” said Garrett Mullen, Senior Product Marketing Manager, Laboratory Management Informatics at Waters Corporation. “It readily adapts to existing informatics environments, smoothly linking data from the lab to the business operations of a company enabling science-driven organizations can see more, know more and do more.”
ACQUITY UPC2 Trefoil and Torus Technology Columns
Waters new analytical columns for chiral and achiral separations are designed to optimize convergence chromatography. To address the challenges of chiral separations, Waters ACQUITY UPC2® Trefoil™ Columns are 2.5 micron particle columns that increase speed and selectivity while reducing method development time. Waters ACQUITY UPC2 Torus™ Columns for achiral separations feature 1.7 micron particle technology and deliver a new level of performance for achiral SFC separations in terms of resolution, speed, selectivity and robustness. The columns were introduced at SFC 2014 and are now available for shipment worldwide.
These advanced columns are designed for use with the Waters ACQUITY UPC2 System, a chromatographic system that takes advantage of the power of non-toxic and inexpensive compressed carbon dioxide as the primary mobile phase (carrier liquid) component. It is also a “greener” alternative to expensive organic solvents. The low-dispersion design of the ACQUITY UPC2 System combined with the new columns offer chromatography laboratories a powerful, robust and reliable analytical platform for increasing the speed with which they can develop analytical methods, improve selectivity and shorten run times, while at the same time reducing their carbon footprint by transitioning to a greener technology. Since its introduction in 2012, scientists using this system have authored and published more than 80 articles in scientific journals.
“Waters continues to lead the way when it comes to making convergence chromatography a powerful platform for robust separations,” said Michael Yelle, Vice President, Consumables Business Unit, Waters Division. “The new Trefoil and Torus columns represent a new paradigm in phases for carbon dioxide based separations. Designed and optimized for Waters ACQUITY UPC2 system, these columns deliver a new standard of performance in terms of the robustness and reliability that scientists have come to expect from analytical HPLC.”
SFE Bio-Botanical Extraction System
Waters today announced the immediate availability of a new ten-liter extraction vessel for its SFE Bio-Botanical Extraction System, a multi-vessel supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) system that rapidly fractionates and extracts large quantities of desired components from a multitude of botanical matrices.
The ten-liter vessel doubles current capacity and can be acquired as an add-on to installed systems. It will be available on new systems in March 2015.
“As the extraction system of choice, the SFE Bio-Botanical Extraction System provides high extraction efficiency and selective fractionation of an extract in a single run,” said Mark Groudas, Vice President, Americas Field Operations, Waters Division. “The drive to increase system capacity comes directly from our customers who seek longer, unattended operation of their extraction processes. As important as run time, users are seeing increased consistency of final extracted products from run-to-run.”
