Reducing infection transmission risk on a paediatric high dependency unit was just one of the topics under discussion at Lyon, France on the first day of the Healthcare Infection Society Conference 2014. A study showing how the Bioquell Pod has benefited the Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust was presented to leading healthcare professionals.

The Bioquell Pod is an infection control enclosure that has been designed to limit the spread of pathogens in ward environments and can be used to convert units into single occupancy rooms. It facilitates infection control management by segregating patients while offering easy observation for nurses. It is a tailored temporary structure which doesn’t require the closure of the unit during installation.

Speaking at the event, three representatives involved in the study presented the results comparing the number of missed isolation days before and after the installation of 3 pods in a 15 bed HDU. Missed isolations each day significantly fell from 3.2 pre-pod to 1 during the first year of pod use (p<0.001). This data reflects how the use of the Bioquell Pod reduces transmission risk.

The study authors, including Pauline Bradshaw, Associate Director of Infection Prevention and Control at the Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, commented, “Pods provide us with much more flexibility in providing the best care for all patients. The ability to deliver effective isolation precautions in an open ward environment was invaluable and freed up side rooms for patients with other needs.”
