The Ministry of Health (MoH) has installed a Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) mobile lab outside East Arafat Hospital as part of its public-health preparedness program for Hajj.

This laboratory, the first of its kind in the Kingdom, will help expedite the detection of microorganisms that cause epidemic and infectious diseases. The availability of the lab during Hajj will help speed up the screening and diagnosis of pilgrims suspected of having infectious diseases, including MERS-CoV. With the latest technology, lab technicians can now examine samples and deliver results in just a few hours.

“The implementation and use of the mobile lab for the first time during Hajj is the fruit of increased cooperation between the King Abdulaziz University (KAU) and the MoH,” said Dr. Esam Ibraheem Ahmed Azhar. Dr. Azhar is Vice-Dean for Graduate Studies and Scientific Research at KAU, Head of the Special Infectious Agent Unit at the King Fahd Medical Research Center, and a member of the MoH Advisory Board.

“The mobile lab is equipped with high-tech diagnostic and safety instruments to help identify and contain infectious pathogens. This includes, for example, a negative air machine, which passes air from the lab through HEPA filters and discharges it in such a way as to protect the surrounding environment, health care workers and patient samples from exposure and contamination,” Dr. Azhar said. “The lab is ready to safely receive samples for testing from across the Holy Sites, and results will be given within four to six hours.”

The mobile lab, which is operated by a team of specially trained experts, is of great importance during Hajj season, Dr. Azhar said. “Its ability to screen, detect and diagnose various diseases and viruses, especially MERS-CoV, quickly is essential to detect, cure and eventually prevent the spread of diseases and protect pilgrims and our country. May God keep our country safe from all harm.”

Dr. Azhar noted many government agencies work together during Hajj season to provide the highest level of service to pilgrims. “Agencies work within an integrated, harmonious system under the leadership of King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, to serve and provide the highest level of health and security to all guests of Allah.”
