Raman In-Depth Focus 2013
  • Raw material identification using dual laser handheld Raman spectroscopy
(Author: Sulaf Assi, Associate Lecturer, Forensic Sciences, Bournemouth University)
Raw material identification is a significant and crucial stage in validating the authenticity of pharmaceutical products as pharmaceutical manufacturers have been recently moving into 100 per cent testing of incoming raw material. The Falsified Medicines Directive (FMD) that came into light in July 2013 assured tough rules on the assessment of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and excipients…
  • Raman spectroscopy in support of biotherapeutic production: applications in protein formulation and purification
(Author: Xiaolin Cao, Drug Product Development, Amgen Inc.)
Raman spectroscopy has witnessed fast expansion in the last decade in the pharmaceutical industry. Raman has shown unique advantages in performing in situ and non-invasive detection with no or minimal sample preparation. In this mini review, we focus on its current applications in support of protein formulation and purification with three representative case studies. These include the identification of the proteinaceous particles isolated from formulation stability samples; the characterisation of lot differences in urea and guanidine hydrochloride (GdnHCl) used for protein denaturation and refolding; and the differentiation of discoloured and control CEX resin used for protein purification…
  • Raman Spectroscopy Roundtable
(Participants: Katherine Bakeev, Director – Application Support Services, B&W Tek / Bree Allen, Vice President & General Manager, Rigaku / Michael Hargreaves, Applied R&D Manager, Thermo Fisher / Harald Fischer, Marketing Director, WiTec. Moderated by: Sulaf Assi, Associate Lecturer in Forensic Sciences, Bournemouth University)
